Worship Preparation for Palm Sunday - March 16, 2008
Palm Sunday
Liturgy of the Palms
Matthew 21:1-11
Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29
Liturgy of the Passion
Isaiah 50:4-9a
Psalm 31:9-16
Philippians 2:5-11
Matthew 26:14-27:66
Palm Sunday is an invitation to use all of your senses and ranges of emotion. The service begins with joy and celebration, and ends with sadness. There are palms to touch, hymns to hear and words to digest. Ask your child if they have ever had a day that started really well and then, suddenly turned upside down. This is what happened to Jesus during this time of his life. It is a day of extremes…..much like what a child experiences. Use this time to gently prepare your child for the week that is ahead. But mostly be a good listener as to what part of the story he or she is ready to hear and can absorb.
Worship Preparation for March 2, 2008
March 2, 2008
1 Samuel 16:1-13: God sends Samuel to find and anoint as king one of the sons of Jesse
Psalm 23
Ephesians 5:8-14. "For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light."
John 9:1-41. Jesus puts mud on the eyes of a man born blind and sends him to wash in the pool at Siloam. The blind man gains his sight and immediately becomes a missionary.
This is a good week to talk to your child about how God sees us. Ask your child about all the different ways we can “see” our parents without actually making eye contact with them. For example, a child once said that she knew her mother was home from a party when she heard her heels clicking on the hardwood floor. She was immediately comforted. Another child remarked that he followed his dad’s footsteps on the beach one day in order to find where he had gone. We “see” in many ways as does God. Sometimes it involves our eyes, other times it is our sense of hearing, touch, or smell. It is comforting to know that God sees us as we are trying to see God.
Worship Preparation for February 17
Genesis 12: 1-4a God initiates a covenant with Abram to leave his country and family.
Psalm 121
Romans 4:1-5, 13-17 Abraham was made righteous -- not by works, but by trusting God.
John 3:1-17 Jesus tells Nicodemus "You must be born from above"
This week, the readings ask us to think about our way of living and "begin anew" by affirming our faith as the justification, rather than our works. The liturgy is rich with images of how God saves us. Last week, the readings focused on how to make ammends for our mistakes. This week, the readings help us to understand that, like the wind, God swirls around us, and our faith in God alone is the strongest thing we can do. Talk with your child about the ever-present God. God is in the wind, God is in the snow, God is in the stars, God is in the valentine I hang on my door, God is the love that sustains us.
Worship Preparation for February 10, 2008
Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7. Adam and Eve are tempted by a serpent to distrust God and eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Psalm 32. A voice of wisdom from one who has sinned, confessed, and known God's forgiveness.
Romans 5:12-19. Jesus Christ as the New Adam who frees us from the power of sin and death.
Matthew 4:1-11. Matthew's story of Jesus tempted by the devil in the wilderness.
Since so much of this week's readings focus on sin and death.... try to talk to your child simply about good and bad in their life. When do they feel good? When do things not feel so good? Talk to them about the resources they have and the people they can trust. Talk to them about praying throughout the times that don't feel good. Ask them to look for Jesus as we begin this Lenten journey.

April 18-20 Children and Families Spring Retreat
On the weekend of April 18-20 families will come together at Camp Omsted for our annual Spring Retreat. This is a favorite time for our families as we have the rare chance to spend time together away from day to day distractions in a beautiful setting. There will be periods of unscheduled play and relaxation time, workshop and learning time, worship time, and meal times. Of course, the favorite is the evening campfire - complete with singing, s'mores, and unique fellowship. Please mark your calendars now!
